Johannes Leertouwer

Matthäus Passion

On Tuesday, April 15, 2025, the performance of the St. Matthew Passion will take place in the Grote Kerk Breda.

Conducted by Johannes Leertouwer

"Ten years ago we started with a new kind of St. Matthew Passion: two orchestras with 10 singers. The 10 singers also form the choir and there is no conductor on screen. The collective tells the story directly to you, the audience. The experience is intense and moving. The conductor is not on screen, but of course he is there... there are even several.

As artistic director, I share my vision of the music with the musicians during rehearsals. Singers and instrumentalists conduct the arias. I (Johannes Leertouwer) am in the middle of the ensemble and conduct where necessary, not with a baton but with my eyes, sometimes my eyebrows and especially with my violin. The audience and the critics are enthusiastic. Every year, visitors respond gratefully and often even moved.

" NRC wrote: “Leertauer’s intimate Matthäus is a model of elegance and intimacy.”
